'Life With Wings' is a theme that I've been exploring for many years. In 2008, I made a painting of four dead insects that I found in my backyard: a dragonfly, a moth, a butterfly and a bee. I had been making mostly abstract figure paintings up until this point and I remember questioning the validity of rendering the little dead bugs. I ignored my doubts and finished the painting. Needless to say it marked a shift in the work and I began to focus on nature as my primary subject. Consequently, I became aware of Colony Collapse Disorder, the threat motivated me to explore the beauty and fragility of animals that pollinate our food. Creatures, that are such an integral part of life and survival.
The following images are from the Life With Wings Series, as well as other bodies of work it has inspired.
